The Parts of a Good Running Plan

For those who care quite a bit about their health and fitness, something that can be of great benefit to your cardiovascular health is the simple act of running or jogging. If you’re really serious about getting or staying fit, you need to make a plan for yourself and stick to it. Sure, you can simply go out every day and start running to your heart’s content, but without any specific plan in mind, your workout can end up a bit inconsistent. With a proper plan, you’ll have something to look forward to as well as a set of goals that you can set out to achieve. It’s not too difficult either—it’s mostly about listening to what your body is telling you, and forming a plan accordingly.

Amount of Time

You need to decide on how much time you want to spend running every day. It’s not only about knowing your capabilities, but keeping a time limit means that you can have a target that you can work towards if you find that you can’t make the time that you set for yourself. Over time, you can become a little bit faster each day, and eventually beat that milestone. It’s something that ends up feeling very satisfying and rewarding.

Endurance

And of course, the amount of time that you run ties into how much endurance that you have. While we implied above that you should set an amount of time that will push your limits, just keep in mind what your realistic physical limitations are. If you push yourself too much, it can become very easy to get discouraged, and fall into the habit of staying home rather than working out your lungs. You want to set times that are only slightly higher than what you can actually endure. Make the process gradual.

Frequency

Ideally you’d want to go on a run every day, but it’s also true that people tend to have busy lives and may not be able to set aside time for a nice run every single day. Still, in order for this kind of workout to be effective, you have to be doing it as much as possible, or at least as much as appropriate for the kind of fitness goals that you set for yourself. And most importantly of all, you have to stick to it! When you decide not to stick to the plan for a day, that starts to make it okay to skip other days, and a few more days, and so on. It’s a bad habit to get into.

Existing Plans

If you don’t want to create your own plan, there are plenty of preexisting running plans that are sure to give you a pretty good workout, as long as you’re willing to stick with it to the end. Many of these plans can be found by doing a simple Internet search. However, it’s extremely important to keep in mind that many of the running plans on the Internet are for those training for marathons. Marathons are a lot more strenuous than a nice daily jog on the sidewalk, but on the other hand, if that’s what you’re actually going for, then it’s never too late to get started!
