Question to all out there.

Has anyone else associated with this event been contacted by the charity, with specific reference to their thoughts as to why insufficient numbers came forward in order to have ensured the events success.

I have completed a document from the charity comprising 19 questions for comment to be made.

I sincerely hope as many of you as possible, receive and complete the form, in order for all aspects of opinion to be taken into account.

Be they GOOD or BAD!!

To PhatAdo

I was told over the phone that the final tally was 450 entrants only! A long way short of 1500 minimum needed for the authorities to grant permission. This has been a catastrophe, no other word for it!
I was told weeks ago that numbers were growing rapidly, economic with the truth

Frankly stunned by the news, a real shame for all of those who put in so much time and effort. The fundraising will continue, the battle goes, team Swifty Sanchez will definately be doing something to make our sponsers proud, but I very much doubt we'll be doing it next year!!! Best of luck to all of you who've raised money and are carrying on.

Shame the current participants weren't made aware of this a week or two ago. Surely these concerns were known before the meeting, and had those participating been made aware of this perhaps they could have helped gather more participants.

I know that in my work there are probably a few more interested, and several friends I spoke to were interested even if they didn't say yes initially to the team I entered.

Had we known we could have persued these more and probably boosted the numbers significantly.

That said - what were the current numbers that 1500 wasn't realistic?

Though I do hope to do it when it's re-run next time though...

I think it is appaulling that not enough entrants could be found; are there not sufficient people who are willing to do something for a good cause?

In hindsight maybe the event was not well publicised enough to draw the support and entrants needed?

Being well into our fundraising, our team is going to come up with some imaginative way to hopefully raise even more money for The Prostate Cancer Charity than we would have done for the Real Man event.

I hope that this postponement is no excuse for people to stop raising money, by whatever means, for a truly worthwhile cause.

Spion Kop - We really appreciate your support so far and clearly we are all incredibly disappointed that the event is being postponed. Unfortunately the decision has been taken out of our hands and the authorities cannot sanction the event with the current number of participants.

The website homepage is currently being updated, however we wanted to personally contact each and every participant directly before posting a message on the website.

I have to make this comment regarding todays cancellation of the event.

To say I feel let down and disappointed for what is the only thing that is of any importance, the fund raising itself, would be a gross understatement!!

Pain, time and effort on the part of this event has been put in, and for what? Absolutely nothing.

It is heartbreaking, and the fact that people have been telling me all afternoon that they are convinced it will be a success next year are deluding themselves!!

I for one would simply not have either the nerve or the audacity to approach those I have already had sponsor me on an event that has now vanished into the ether.

Will someone out there tell me that I am not alone in this feeling of utter dejection!!

Hi guys,

So, I'm not a real 'man' but will be doing this in memory of my partner who I lost to prostate cancer three years ago. I'm looking for a team, I don't mind whether you are men or women, and I really don't mind how slow you are (hah, the slower the better probably!). So if anyone wants to save me having to do it alone, just drop me an email to jeatkins27@googlemail.com

The training guide is indeed quite over the top, and is in fact identical to the training plan provided for the British Cyclosportive from London to Glastonbury last year. The plan seems to be more appropriate for that event, which was some 200km - rather than 34km.

British Cycling may have other priorities, but surely a more appropriate training plan should be made available on this site.

I would suggest a couple of sets of hard intervals (4x4 at least) per week, in addition to a couple of 1-2 hour easier rides as a very good start.

Hello
I am looking for a team to become a member of. I had huge ambitions of cycling the whole summer in California which magically I did have until a nasty crash whilst there. I finished my 3rd year of vet school and travelled to the Californian mountains and worked as a mountain bike park ranger until I broke my scaphoid in my wrist. I now want to direct my energy for cycling away from 'self' gain and towards charity. I have cycled many rides for the British Heart Foundation and would be an energetic member of any team. I am living in Cheltenham at the moment keeping up my fitness on my turbo trainer. My arm is freed from its caste on the 20th of August.

I have a good network of friends at University and family around the country who would happily help donate towards this charity.
If I can be any help please email me at : T.H.W.HINDLEY@LIV.AC.UK

As much as I am looking forward to the event,my over riding reason for participating is to try and raise as much money for the charity as I can! I am only an ordinary every day cyclist out to complete the course as best I can. My fear is that the race itself and not the reason for the event will be the be all and end all. I simply hope that I do not feel out of place, as I so much want to feel a part of the whole experience.

Hi Jim, after exhaustive research across the internet, british cycling and the forums ive come to the conclusion that cake does indeed mean eat some cake. The training guide has been provided to us by British Cycling and I have to admit it does seem a little over the top for a 34km ride. If you manage to complete the whole 12 week programme I think you deserve more of a reward than cake but let me know if you are using it and if it is helping.

The event was originally designed as a team event however due to demand we opened it up to individuals as well, many of the coverage articles were written after the launch of the event and as such do not mention the individual entry.

We have recieved a lot of interest in individual sign ups and I can ensure you that there will be many individual cyclists on September 14th.

We are also hoping to put up Just Giving profiles on the website soon so that people can see other cyclists entered both teams and individuals and sponsor them directly.

We have exclusive use of the Excel centre for the whole weekend of the event and as such will have lots of activities and facilities for cyclists and spectators alike. We are reserving half of the arena for the cyclists exclusively - here they will be able to securely store their bikes, have maintaince checks and talk with fellow competitors. The other half will be an area with lots going on from static bike races to bmx displays as well as food, drinks and hospitality areas. This really should prove to be a fantastic weekend for both cyclists and spectators and I really cant wait.

The ‘Real Man’ concept is part of a whole campaign for The Prostate Cancer Charity, it came from our awareness campaign. The idea is that in this day and age, real men care about their health and take responsibility for it (as opposed to the old definition of real men who were careless and macho)
